Top Indian junior Sameer Verma has done the country proud, by finishing in the last 4 in the Men's Singles event at the recently concluded BWF World Junior Badminton Championships-2011 that was held at Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) from 2-Nov-2011 to 06-Nov-2011.
MP lad Sameer Verma who had also won the Silver medal at the Asian Youth Badminton championships-2011 earlier this year was seeded 3/4 in the tournament. He stormed into the semi-finals defeating Ka Long Ng of Hong Kong 21-15, 21-16 in the quarter-finals.
The semi-finals was also a keenly contested affair where Sameer lost the opportunity of reaching the finals of the World junior badminton champion by only a very small margin. Top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark who is currently ranked no.43 in the world defeated Sameer 21-19, 21-19 in two closely fought sets.
Only one Indian, Saina Nehwal has ever managed to become the world junior badminton champion, and though Sameer could not manage to emulate her feat, still reaching the last 4 stage at the world junior level is a big achievement.
Congrats Sameer!
.
I hate to interrupt your dreams...;) But Sameer lost in the semis. Viktor (DEN) and Zulfaldi are fighting it out at this very moment for the championship title.
