Polish Open-2011, Arundhati Pantawane out

Arundhati Pantawane's dream run at the Polish Open -2011 (35th Yonex Polish International Badminton Championships 2011) finally came to an end in the Semi-finals. The Polish Open is being held at Podlaskie in Poland from 24th to 27th March-2011.

6th seed and world no.34 Larisa Griga of Ukraine defeated a cramping Arundhati Pantawane 21-10, 21-17.

Earlier in the first round of the main draw, Arundhati had stunned world no.34 Anastasia Prokopenko of Russia 21-15, 21-23, 22-20, and in the quarter-finals had again come up with a sterling performance to beat world.no.64 Agnese Allegrini of Italy 20-22, 21-11, 21-13.

Arundhati's excellent run & semi-final finish at the Polish open, where she had started as a qualifier, means that she stands to gain 2800 world ranking points, (this being an Internatinal Challenge event). This will help her to move from her current ranking of no.267 to possibly break into the top 200 in world rankings. Important to note is her rapid rise in the charts, given that she was unranked at the start of the year 2011.

In the other women's singles semi-finals, which was a All-japanese affair, Yuka Kusunose defeated country-mate Yui Hashimoto 21-19, 21-15.

Like Arundhati, Yuka Kusunose of Japan, had started this tournament as a qualifier, however comparatively easier draws for her meant that she was able to retain & conserve her energy a bit better than Arundhati who eventually suffered with cramps before the semi-finals.

Former Indian National champion Sayali Gokhale who was defeated by Yuka in the first round, can definitely draw some consolation from the fact, that Yuka has eventually reached the finals, and the only match where Yuka was stretched to 3-sets in this tournament so far, was the match against Sayali.

In the men' singles 3rd seeded Anand Pawar was stopped dead in his tracks by 8th seed Vladimir Ivanov of Russia, who also has reached the finals of the men's singles event. Vladimir defeated Anand 21-10, 11-21, 21-15 in the quarter-finals of the Polish Open.

Arundhati Pantawane stunned world no.35 & 2nd seeded Anastasia Prokopenko of Russia in the first round of the main draw of the Polish Open -2011 (35th Yonex Polish International Championships 2011) being held at Podlaskie in Poland.

The match was as tough as tough can get. And this was expected. Arundhati Pantawane eventually came up with one of her best ever wins defeating her higher ranked rival 21-15 21-23 22-20 in a nail-biter of a finish.

Arundhati followed up this splendid performance with another good win in the 2nd round defeating her Japanese rival, Minatsu Mitani 10-21, 21-19, 21-15 in another tough 3-setter match, to storm into the quarter-finals of the Polish Open-2011. Arundhati is now up against 6th seeded Agnese Allegrini (badminton world ranking 64) of Italy in the quarter-finals.

In another women's singles match Sayali Gokhale, who started well, eventually could not get past the first hurdle as she lost in the first round against her Japanese rival Yuka Kusunose. Yuka defeated Sayali 9-21, 21-18, 21-15.

Men' Singles Results:

Polish Open-2011: Arundhati, Aditya start well

Arundhati Pantawane and Aditya Prakash of India had a great start to their Polish Open-2011 campaign as they won all their rounds in the qualifying events of the badminton tournament to storm into the main draw of the women's singles and men's singles events respectively.

The Polish Open-2011 (35th Yonex Polish International Badminton Championship 2011) is being held at Podlaskie in Poland from 24th to 27th March.

In the first round of the main draw, Arundhati will now face the 2nd seeded Anastasia Prokopenko of Russia, who is currently ranked No.35 in the world. This will be one very tough match for Arundhati, but given the form Arundhati is in, anything looks possible, and if she can pull this off, she could even go all the way to the title.

While Arundhati Pantawane won all her qualifying rounds in straight sets, Aditya Prakash had to battle hard to get into the main draw. Both his matches went to 3-sets, but ultimately to his credit he prevailed over his opponents. Aditya will be playing against another qualifier Kim Bruun of Denmark in the first round of the main draw.

The other Indians in the main draw are Anand Pawar who is seeded 3rd in the men's singles, and former national badminton champion Sayali Gokhale, who has got a direct entry into the main draw of the Polish Open-2011.

The Polish Open-2011 (35th Yonex Polish International Badminton Championship 2011) is scheduled to be held at Podlaskie in Poland from 24th to 27th March.

The Indian entries for the Polish Open are as below:

Men's Singles Main draw:
Anand Pawar is seeded 3th in the tournament, and is drawn to play against a qualifier in the first round. Though he has not won any major title recently, his performances have been consistent, and Indian badminton fans can expect a very good showing from him, and possibly he can come back with the Polish Open-2011 title too.

Men's Singles Qualification event:
Aditya Prakash will be seen in action at the men's singles qualifying event. He has got a bye in the first round of the qualifiers.

Women's Singles Main Draw:
Former National Champion of India, Sayali Gokhale will be seen back in action at an international tournament after a long time. She is scheduled to play against a qualifier in the first round. Assuming she wins the first round, she will most probably clash with 8th seeded Carolina Marin of Spain in the 2nd round. Carolina is currently ranked 66 in the world.

Women's Singles Qualification event:
Arundhati Pantawane is taking a part in the Polish badminton tourney and Indian fans can expect a good show from her, given her recent achievements this year that include being runner-up at the National Badminton championships at Rohtak, Silver medal winning effort at the Estonian Open, followed by the National Games Badminton Gold Medal at Ranchi.
Arundhati is scheduled to play against local girl Kamila Augustyn of Poland in the first round of the qualifying event.

All the best to all of the participants. May the best players win!
