Badminton India

THE BADMINTON INDIA STORY:

Badminton in India has a long history. Though the game has not been too popular with the mainstream masses in India who prefer cricket over any other game, it has always had its own share of followers.

In India, Badminton is governed by the Badminton Association of India at the National level, to whom all the State level badminton associations are affiliated.

Famous Indian badminton players in the earlier days:

Prakash Padukone who was India's best badminton player of yesteryears, was also one of top badminton players in the world in his times. He started playing badminton as a child in his hometown Bangalore, and kept on improving his game to become a world class Indian badminton player. Spent several years in Denmark during his playing days. Morten Frost was a close friend and strong contender. Currently runs the Prakash Padukone badminton academy at Bangalore in India, with several branches in other Indian cities as well.

Pullela Gopichand of India, won the prestigious All-England Open badminton tournament in 2001, and his career-best ranking was world no.5. After his career was cut a bit short after some injuries, he devoted his time to developing world class coaching facilities for badminton in India. He runs the Gopichand badminton academy at Hyderabad in India and is a well known coach now. Saina Nehwal receives badminton coaching from Gopichand at his academy.

Aparna Popat was the national badminton women's singles champion of India for several years at a stretch. She was also a strong contender from India at international badminton tournaments. She also represented India at the the Olympics.

There were also several other eminent badminton players in India in the earlier days such as Nandu Natekar, Syed Modi, Rajiv Bagga, Ami Ghia, Madhumita Bisht, Manjusha Pawangadkar and many more.

India - Badminton in recent times:

In the recent times, the rise of Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal, who is currently No.4 in world badminton, has helped to raise the popularity of badminton in India. Other popular Indian badminton players of today are the women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa.

In the men's section also, there are several players from India who are performing well, such as Parupalli Kashyap, Ajay Jayaram, Chetan Anand, RMV Guru Sai Dutt, Anand Pawar, Arvind Bhat and others.

The top Indian men's doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar & Sanave Thomas and the mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V.Diju are also doing very well at the world level.

India - Badminton History

Badminton is believed to have developed in the city of Pune in India, during the British rule. The game was called as the 'Poona game' at that time.
